North Star will open its new shopping center on Sunday, with more than 1 million square feet of retail space, and is the largest mall in Florida, a boon for the state’s second-largest city, which is grappling with a long-running housing crisis.
North Star, which opened in 2008, will be the first new mall in the Tampa Bay area to open in more than a decade.
The city also is looking at expanding its south star, which has about 1 million people.
“This is a win-win for the city and for North Star,” Mayor Bob Buckhorn said in a statement.
“It’s a great location and a great shopping center for all Floridians.”
North Star was built on a former industrial site at the southern end of Tampa Bay, near Interstate 495.
The shopping center is expected to be the largest building in the area.
A new north star is expected in early 2018.
The building is expected be ready for occupancy by summer 2019.
Northstar will be owned by the city of Tampa and will be built with a mixed-use plan, including restaurants, offices, hotels, retail and a public realm that includes an art gallery and concert venue.
In addition, the new mall is expected have a variety of restaurants, a pharmacy and a movie theater.
North Stars latest move is a sign of progress for the Tampa area, which had struggled with housing and economic growth for decades.
NorthStar is a partnership between the city, state, the state of Florida and the Greater Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce.
The project is expected create up to 15,000 jobs.
The developer of the new north stars new center, GBC Capital Partners, says it expects to create about 15,500 construction jobs.
GBC also is partnering with the U.S. Postal Service and the National Park Service to bring the center to South Florida.
The state’s largest employer, Florida Department of Transportation, will help build the new shopping mall, which will have about 500,000 square feet, according to a city statement.
